A time comes when silence is betrayal . . . We must speak with all the humility that is appropriate to our limited vision, but we must speak.  For we are deeply in need of a new way beyond the darkness so close around us.

Anniversary of a Shameful Day in U.S. History: October 17
A Vigil to Mourn the Signing of the
Military Commissions Act

Just one year ago, on Oct. 17, 2006, we gathered together at the White House to protest the signing into law of the shameful Military Commissions Act (MCA). We tried to deliver the People's Signing Statement to the President, a document outlining our objections to this egregious law.  Our protest was designed to convey our grief and despair over the loss of our nation's moral compass.

On Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, we gathered once again in sadness, this time on the anniversary of the MCA.  About 65 of us lined up on the sidewalk at Mass Ave., near Vice President Cheney’s residence, holding our signs demanding an end to torture and "extraordinary rendition," closure of Guantanamo Bay prison, and restoration of Habeas Corpus.

On this busy street, car horns beeped continuously in support, and many drivers gave us a thumbs-up sign. We will continue to protest, lobby, organize and educate--until we prevail and our Constitution is restored.
